Artist Biography
Emily Leonard Trenholm paints en plein air, throughout New England in the spring, summer and fall. Growing up in Yarmouth, Maine, she spent most of her childhood exploring the woods and rocks near the Casco Bay shoreline. The Maine landscape directly and significantly influences her work. Emily is interested in creating volumes of negative and positive space through the use of color. As a result, she describes the geometry of the elements, which shape our communities.
Emily attended the University of New Hampshire, where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting. She is currently earning her Graduate degree in painting at Boston University under the study of John Walker. Her work can be found ongoing at the Littlefield Gallery in Winter Harbor, Camden Falls Gallery in Camden and Maine Cottage in Yarmouth, Maine.
Artist Statement
Structural and organic forms resonate with me and I paint in an attempt to capture the fragmented parts that contribute to the whole scene. Conjuring a sense of place, my compositions filter the world around me.
Architectural space that abounds in small and large geometrical forms, manifest this interplay. I look to find linear and organic elements, which create a subtle energy when juxtaposed to large planes. From a surprising perspective, I look underneath and back, reaching for a view, where forms develop from negative space.
I work to keep my paintings loose, describing volumes by planes of color. My limited palette simplifies the subject of my painting to the basic fundamentals of form and light. I mix paint at length before I apply, then break down the composition tonally. Slowly, I bring the simplified picture to the surface.
